Let's get Nosey!
Did you know that the human nose has more than 60 distinct functions that can directly impact growth and development, sleep, and overall well-being?
One of the most powerful aspects of learning is how personal it becomes. As you begin to understand how your nose works, you may discover connections to your own breathing, sleep, energy, and health that you have never considered before. But before that journey begins, I’d like to share the clinical foundation behind my work.
I’ve had the privilege of helping advance 4-phase rhinomanometry (4PR), the most detailed objective test of nasal function, through my work with the late Dr. Klaus H. Vogt, my mentor, friend, coauthor, the inventor, the pioneer, and father of the modern-day, computerized multi-phase rhinomanometer. My work continues his legacy of sixty years by translating advanced airway science into practical, clinically meaningful insights. It was my promise to him during our last chat before he passed.
This platform is dedicated to educating both clinicians and the public on nasal function and resistance as critical biomarkers of health. These factors influence craniofacial growth, autonomic nervous system balance, chewing and swallowing, sleep quality, cognitive performance, dental and orthodontic alignment, and systemic health. When nasal resistance exceeds your “normal” range, it alters airflow dynamics and pressure relationships within the airway and body, affecting growth, treatment monitoring, clinical decision-making, and our long-term health outcomes.
My focus is on bridging airway physiology and real-world care through concepts such as nasal resistance, slow airflow hypoxia (SAH), and the neuro-respiratory connection. These are not abstract ideas; they are measurable physiologic factors that influence how we breathe, how we sleep, and how the entire body functions.
Did you know there are hundreds of factors that influence nasal resistance and how your nose works?
Whether you’re here to explore nasal function as the “Fifth Vital Sign,” learn more, or find guidance as a patient to manage nasal function and testing resistance, you are in the right place. I am honored to guide you.

Welcome to The Airway Corner
What if you were told it’s not just how you breathe, but the amount of airway resistance required to breathe?
Did you know that no two noses are alike, not even among identical twins? It’s like a fingerprint! Each person has their own unique ‘normal’ nasal resistance profile. As resistance shifts, the body adapts in subtle, cumulative ways, often invisible to the patient, yet measurable with the right tools and devices. So, what is the range of normal function? It’s complicated.
This is the gap Dr. Karen set out to solve nearly a decade ago.
Nasal resistance is your own unique biophysical signal, a “Fifth Vital Sign,” it’s not just a symptom. Through years of dedicated research and analysis of thousands of 4PR tracings and data, Dr. Davidson has discovered new airway phenomena, as well as defined rhinopathia endotyping, phenotyping, and genotyping based on Dr. Vogt’s term rhinopathia nocturna, or sleepy nose, while identifying more than 250 variables that influence nasal function. She then developed novel, IP-driven algorithms that translate into meaningful functional insights & clinical decision intelligence which she teaches practitioners. This first-of-its-kind approach objectively interprets what a patient feels but cannot quantify, and what providers cannot detect with the naked eye or a nasal scope.
The Airway Corner™ supports a range of initiatives: providing in-office or remote care, lecturing internationally, consulting with medical and dental companies, evaluating airway-enhancing products, mentoring healthcare professionals, and developing courses that help practices expand their impact.
Dr. Davidson’s work is inspired by her clinical experiences and her son, Zach, whose journey overcoming sleep and airway issues motivates her every day. Through research and development in the ENT airway lab, she strives to elevate airway health for patients, providers, and the public – one airway at a time.
“We don’t just breathe, we breathe against nasal resistance, and that resistance shapes our anatomy and physiology.” Dr. Karen

Welcome to the Let’s Get Nosey™ Podcast, the show where the airway isn’t an afterthought; it’s the starting point for understanding health.
For nearly four decades as a licensed provider, three decades in the medical device industry, nearly two decades as a military flight nurse, and a career spanning critical care, ENT, sleep medicine, OR/PACU, plastic surgery, aerospace and flight medicine, pharmaceuticals, and airway diagnostics, she learned one thing:
“If you want to understand the body,
you have to start with the nose.”
Each episode, we dive deep into stories or the science of nasal function, resistance, breathing mechanics, neuro-respiratory pathways, and why the nose is one of the most overlooked diagnostic organs in medicine and dentistry. You’ll get evidence-based insights, clinical pearls, practical strategies, and conversations with a variety of guests that challenge outdated thinking.
So if you’re ready to rethink nasal function, sleep, and what you thought you knew about airway health . . . . .

Questions About Nasal Function?

Hello & Welcome!
Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee, and let’s chat about something a little different: nasal function. Sleep and breathing topics are everywhere, so instead, I like to focus on the nose itself, the gateway to so much of our health. In fact, I authored the first two books on nasal function available to the public, offering a new perspective and clinical guidance to the field, available online or at a bookstore near you!
My journey began in 1983 in a small respiratory therapy program. After a brief flirtation with lung physiology and then veterinary medicine (I quickly realized I wasn’t cut out to be Dr. Doolittle), I found my way to nursing. In 1988, I left Northeast Ohio and transferred to UNC–Chapel Hill. By 1991, during my senior year, I gained hands-on experience as a nurse extern in the PACU at UNC Hospitals, envisioning a future as a Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). I quickly learned that managing a pediatric airway is very different from managing an adult airway. It was Carolina, and on game days, you could find us sneaking away from studying to catch the action at the Dean Dome, Keenan Stadium, or along Franklin Street.
Shortly after, I became the first new graduate nurse (RN) in the PACU at MUSC in Charleston, SC, and in 1993, I was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Traveling the world was incredible, but serving as a Flight/ICU nurse during various operations and missions, including Operation Enduring Freedom (2001), Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003), and others opened my eyes to the realities of practicing under extraordinary pressure and conditions, and how much, and quickly the environment can influence airway function and the next breath.
Over the years, I’ve worn what seems too many hats. In 2017, I brought the NR6 4-phase rhinomanometer to the North American market in my executive role. By 2019, I introduced 4PR to the dental community and beyond, further empowering clinicians to measure and understand nasal function in ways never before possible. In 2022, proprietary data interpreation software DAFNE Score and training courses launched.
For some, it takes a bit longer to find our true passion, but when we do, it lights the way of our path. For me, every patient, every measurement, every insight, and discovery is an opportunity to improve the quality of life—one breath at a time.
