Did you know that we have more than 60 nasal functions that impact our health? One of the unique things about learning is how personal it can become. You may discover things about your nose and your health that you’ve never considered before. Before that journey begins, I’d like to offer some context about my work.
I’ve had the privilege of helping advance 4-phase rhinomanometry, working with the late Dr. Klaus H. Vogt, the Father of Computerized 4-Phase Rhinomanometry, to carry forward his legacy. My goal isn’t titles, it’s translating airway science, the concepts of slow airflow hypoxia (SAH), and the neuro-respiratory complex into practical insights that improve daily life and clinical practice.
My platform is to help others understand nasal function and resistance as meaningful biomarkers, highlighting their critical roles in breathing, craniofacial development, sleep, neural pathways, and overall well-being.
Whether you’re here to explore nasal function as the “Fifth Vital Sign,” learn more about the benefits of nasal function, or find guidance as a patient for managing congestion and testing resistance, you are in the right place. I am honored to guide you.
Breathe easy, Sleep well!™
What if you were told it’s not just how you breathe, but the amount of airway resistance required to breathe?
Did you know that no two noses are alike, not even among identical twins? It’s like a fingerprint! Each person has their own unique ‘normal’ nasal resistance profile that governs airflow, sleep quality, and overall physiological balance. As resistance shifts, the body adapts in subtle, cumulative ways, often invisible to the patient, yet measurable with the right tools and devices. So, what is normal function? It’s complicated.
This is the gap Dr. Karen set out to solve nearly a decade ago.
Nasal resistance is your unique biophysical signal, a “Fifth Vital Sign,” not just a symptom. Through years of dedicated research and analysis, Dr. Davidson identified over 250 variables that influence nasal function and developed novel, IP-driven algorithms within proprietary software and airway AI. These technologies translate nasal geometry, resistance, and airflow into meaningful functional insights & clinical decision intelligence.
This first-of-its-kind approach objectively interprets nasal function and its impact on human physiology, revealing what patients feel but cannot quantify, and what providers cannot detect with the naked eye or a nasal scope.
The Airway Corner™ supports a range of initiatives: providing in-office and remote patient care with her, lecturing internationally, consulting with medical companies, evaluating novel airway-enhancing products, mentoring healthcare professionals, and developing courses that help practices expand their impact.
Dr. Davidson’s work is inspired by her clinical experiences and her son, Zach, whose journey overcoming airway challenges motivates her every day. Through research, clinical care, volunteering, legislative policy work, and various educational platforms, she strives to elevate airway health for patients, providers, and the public – one airway at a time.

Clinical Insights into Nasal Function and Resistance as a Biomarker of Health™
Welcome to the Let’s Get Nosey™ Podcast, the show where the airway isn’t an afterthought; it is the starting point for understanding health, sleep, performance, and the brain.
For nearly four decades as a licensed provider, three decades in the medical device industry, nearly two decades as a military flight nurse, and a career spanning critical care, ENT, sleep medicine, aerospace medicine, pharmaceuticals, and airway diagnostics, I’ve learned one thing:
“If you want to understand the body,
you have to start with the nose.”
Each episode, we dive deep into stories or the science of nasal function, resistance, breathing mechanics, neuro-respiratory pathways, and why the nose is one of the most overlooked diagnostic organs in medicine and dentistry. You’ll get evidence-based insights, clinical pearls, practical strategies, and conversations with a variety of guests that challenge outdated thinking.
So if you’re ready to rethink nasal function, sleep, and what you thought you knew about airway health . . . . .

Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee, and let’s chat about something a little different: nasal function. Sleep and breathing topics are everywhere, so instead, I like to focus on the nose itself, the gateway to so much of our health. In fact, I authored the first two books on nasal function available to the public, offering a new perspective and clinical guidance to the field, available online or at a bookstore near you!
My journey began in 1983 in a small respiratory therapy program. After a brief flirtation with lung physiology and then veterinary medicine (I quickly realized I wasn’t cut out to be Dr. Doolittle), I found my way to nursing. In 1988, I left Northeast Ohio and transferred to UNC–Chapel Hill. By 1991, during my senior year, I gained hands-on experience as a nurse extern in the PACU at UNC Hospitals, envisioning a future as a Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). I also quickly learned that managing a pediatric airway is very different from managing an adult airway. It was Carolina, and on game days, you could often find us sneaking away from studying to catch the action at the Dean Dome, Keenan Stadium, or along Franklin Street.
Shortly after, I became the first new graduate nurse in the PACU at MUSC in Charleston, SC, and in 1993, I was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Traveling the world was incredible, but serving as a flight/ICU nurse during various missions, including Operation Enduring Freedom (2001) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003), opened my eyes to the realities of practicing under extraordinary conditions, and how much the environment can influence airway function and the next breath.
Over the years, I’ve worn what seems too many hats. In 2017, I brought 4-phase rhinomanometry to the North American market in my executive role. By 2019, I introduced it to dentistry and beyond, empowering a lot of clinicians to measure and really understand nasal function in ways never before possible.
For some, it takes longer to find our true passion, but when we do, it lights the way. For me, every patient, every measurement, and every insight is an opportunity to improve the quality of life—one breath at a time.
